Reflexology Lymph Drainage

-The Sally Kay Method

What is Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD)?

RLD is an award winning reflexology technique which focuses on stimulating the lymphatic reflexes on the feet. The aim is to cause an effect on the lymphatic system in the body. It is a unique sequence that has been researched and developed by Sally Kay BSc(Hons), whilst working in Cancer Care. The results appear to support the theory of reflexology.

The technique was developed to help with lymphoedema which is defined as tissue swelling due to the failure of lymph drainage. After breast cancer, a person may experience psychological or emotional difficulties due to altered body image, and a swollen limb can exacerbate this. Research suggests that survivors with lymphoedema are more likely to suffer psychological and emotional difficulties, be more disabled, and experience a poorer quality of life than survivors without the condition. Improved breast cancer survival rates suggest that approximately 2:3 women survive the disease beyond 20 years. This means that more people are living longer with this debilitating side effect for which there is currently no cure.

How Does It Work?

RLD was developed through clinical practice while working in cancer care outpatient clinics, using reflexology for patients suffering from all kinds of cancers at all stages of the disease. It is based on the same concepts of lymphatic drainage massage.

RLD protocol was developed and formalised, it is performed on the feet and is tailored to the affected limb. It differs according to which side has been treated for breast cancer.

What Are The Possible Benefits?

Lymphatic drainage massage (MLD) is used to treat conditions other than lymphoedema, and RLD may be used similarly.

RLD may be useful with the following conditions:

  • Lymphoedma
  • Lipoedema
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Sinus Problems
  • Muscular Tension
  • PMS
  • Asthma
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Migraines
  • Aches & Pains
  • Eczema
  • ME
  • Headaches

What to Expect

All sessions begin with getting you settled and comfortable in the recliner.
Both feet will be wiped with warm baby wipes.
The foot not being worked on will then be wrapped in a soft covering. Lotion of your choice will be applied.
Using my fingers to perform specific techniques and gentle sweeping motions in a very gentle treatment.
RLD is a less invasive, gentle, simple and effective method of reflexology to help with the management of lymphoedema,

both primary and secondary.

During the session you may feel some tenderness in certain areas, this is perfectly normal.

Please advise me of these tender areas or anything painful.

You may experience a chill, again this is perfectly normal, blankets are on hand if you require please let me know if you need one.

Once I have worked both feet I will reapply a small amount of lotion and gently massage it into your feet and legs.
You are welcome to relax in the massage chair for a few minutes to soak up the experience.
Water is available if you desire as well.
If you have any questions, comments or feedback before, during or after the session please don't hesitate to ask.
Looking forward to getting my hands on you!
A typical session lasts approximately 50 minutes
